The Proton Therapy Center at Huntsman Cancer Institute is one of 37 such facilities in the country, using a newer type of radiation therapy that uses particles called protons instead of photons or electrons as in other radiation treatment. The result is a targeted treatment that avoids dosing nearby healthy tissue, which leads to fewer side effects compared to traditional radiation. This three-story facility houses a 15-ton cyclotron, CT imaging, and supporting equipment. VBFA was instrumental to the design of the Proton Therapy Center, providing mechanical, plumbing, and civil engineering.
