As the community’s healthcare needs have grown, Intermountain Healthcare knew it needed to provide a new, full-service hospital to help meet those needs.

VBFA provided the mechanical and plumbing engineering design for the hospital as well as the associated Central Utility Plant, including medical gas system, pure water, domestic water, and steam systems. The central plant used a low-temp hot water design with condensing boilers limiting the amount of steam production. This choice was made due to water boilers being more efficient than steam boilers. Additionally, the boilers can run on natural gas for back-up. The hospital system uses a central variable air volume (VAV) system with five air handlers on top of the tower and two air handlers for the clinic building. The team put a significant effort into making the hospital energy efficient, leading to a 30.9 percent energy reduction compared to code minimum as well as a 35 percent reduction in water use.
