Electrical Engineering Services

Electrical engineering is a broad term that encompasses many different specialties, but it can generally be grouped into two distinct categories:

Electrical power

Power Systems

This category of services focuses on the large-scale creation, management, and enhancement of systems that generate power to fuel a project’s many different electrical needs. This includes:

  • Grounding and Bonding
  • Utility Coordination
  • Emergency Generators and Distribution Systems
  • Power Distribution Systems
  • Arc Flash Analysis | Fault Current Calculations | Selective Coordination Studies
  • Renewable Energy Projects (Photovoltaic)
Electrical low voltage

Low-Voltage Systems

Conversely, this category of services focuses on systems and equipment that use 50 volts or less of electricity. These systems support the many different technological, security, and communication needs of a project, and may include:

  • Structured Cabling
  • Low Voltage Raceway Systems
  • Telecommunications
  • Audio/Video
  • Fire Alarm Systems
  • Security Systems

Frequently Asked Questions

What is electrical engineering?

Electrical engineering is the study, design, and application of various devices and equipment that use electricity, electromagnetism, and electronics to improve modern life. Electrical engineering is just one discipline of engineering. Comparatively, electrical engineering is relatively new; it was developed in the late 19th century as electricity was more widely understood and applied.

What do electrical engineers do?

Electrical engineers find new and innovative ways to use electricity and create electrical systems. Using mathematics, problem-solving skills, and physics, electrical engineers design, build, review and manage new or existing electrical solutions. From electric motors to power grids, these types of engineers advance the capabilities of electricity in every industry and field.

What do power engineers do?

A power engineer is a type of electrical engineer who focuses on generating, transmitting, distributing, and using electricity as a power source. They also design and create power-related equipment such as transformers, certain types of generators, electric motors, and more.

What are the types of electrical engineering?

Electrical engineering is a broad field that has many focuses. Today, electrical engineers may specialize in specific disciplines within the electrical engineering umbrella, such as electronics, power, computers, telecommunications, lighting, control systems, robotics, microelectronics, and more.

What is electrical construction?

Electrical construction is a subset of construction concerned with the installation and maintenance of a facility’s electrical systems. Electrical contractors, or those who work in electrical construction, often collaborate closely with electrical engineers to ensure critical electrical systems and equipment are properly installed and functioning correctly. While electrical engineers focus on the design and optimization of electrical solutions, electrical contractors help bring those plans to life during construction. Both hold a deep understanding of electricity, electronics, and power, and can problem-solve during various stages of design and construction to guarantee the successful implementation of whatever electrical systems a facility requires.

What is a power system?

A power system is a network of equipment and components that create, transmit, and use electrical power. Perhaps the best-known power system is the electrical grid that harnesses, transports, and delivers power to homes and businesses throughout a community. This type of system can also be found in large-scale industrial or commercial facilities that require substantial electrical power. These types of facilities or developments have their own power generators within power stations. The power created within that station is then transported throughout the building(s) before being distributed to the specific systems or equipment needing electrical energy. Electrical engineers are highly skilled in designing these types of power systems for facilities of all sizes and needs.

How does a power system work?

First, power must be generated. When it comes to large-scale power systems, fossil fuels, nuclear energy, or renewable energy (such as solar or wind power) are used to supply energy. Then, electricity is transported from the power station using high-voltage transmission lines. Once arriving at various substations, the high-voltage electricity is converted and “stepped down” to a lower voltage in order to distribute it to the necessary systems in the area.

How does an electrical circuit work?

A simple electrical circuit is a closed path along which electricity flows. All that is needed for an electrical circuit is a power source, a load (or the component that consumes the power), and a ground. The electrical source is either DC (a direct current, such as a battery) or AC (an alternating current, such as a wall outlet). Electrical circuits include wires, wire connectors, switches, circuit protection devices, relays, electrical loads, and grounds. Electrical engineers use the foundational elements of this basic electrical circuit to create highly detailed and innovative designs that support powerful and complex electrical applications.
