The University of Utah Health Sciences Education Building marks the first LEED Certified project for the University of Utah, the Utah System of Higher Education and the DFCM of Utah (Division of Facilities Construction and Management).
In order for the building to become LEED certified, it was required to score at least 26 points on the LEED certification checklist. One of the points which the building received was the innovative pilot parking program, which promotes carpooling. Other design elements that contributed to the building's LEED certification include: dark-sky lighting, low volatile organic compound paints and sealants, and the use of materials that don't off-gas. Drinking, smoking, and eating were not allowed on the site during construction. In addition, the building was ventilated for two weeks to allow gasses, dust, and other odors to be eliminated prior to occupancy and 93% of construction waste was recycled.
