This state-of-the-art central chilled water plant serves the Health Sciences Campus. Equipment that had exceeded its useful life was replaced. The plant was funded by energy savings and reduced operation and maintenance costs. Four centrifugal chillers produce 6,800 tons of cooling with capacity for expansion to 10,000 tons. Four variable speed pumps distribute 13,600 gpm of 41 degree F chilled water through 9,600 feet of underground piping to twelve buildings. This plant includes a 1,000 ton water-side economizer utilizing 39 degree F water from the tower, producing 44 degree F chilled water for winter operation. This replaces chiller operation when wet-bulb temperatures are below 36 degrees F.
