VBFA was responsible for the mechanical design and construction of the Olympic 400 meter speedskating oval and ice skating rink located in Kearns, Utah. The oval was first designed as an outdoor sheet. It operated that way for several years. Prior to the 2002 Olympics, the oval was covered with a 300,000 square foot dome to provide a controlled environment and year-round skating. VBFA was responsible for the mechanical design of the covered facility. The refrigeration system is an ammonia/brine system of approximately 1,000 tons capacity. Two 20,000 square foot ice sheets are located inside the oval. Two 20,000 square foot ice sheets are located inside the oval.
The Speedskating Oval was one of the first 12 projects in the USA to be awarded LEED Certification. |
