The Huntsman Cancer Institute Research Hospital is a unique patient care environment inspired by the founders, Jon and Karen Huntsman. The goal of the Institute and the Cancer Research Hospital is to put patients first and provide hope through research and treatment on the road to finding cures for cancer. The cancer research hospital is a 265,000 square foot, 50-bed, inpatient and outpatient treatment facility.
The hospital portion of the project is the patient care component of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, whose mission initiated by the completion of the Phase I Cancer Research Facility, includes research, education, and patient care. The Cancer Hospital Building is designed to make a patient feel at home immediately. All of the treatment areas for the facility are accessible from a single three-story atrium lobby.
Two additional stories house the patient care unit which is designed to be a

multidisciplinary integrated unit, including respiratory therapy, intensive care, and physical therapies. The Sixth Floor includes administrative offices and The Pointe Restaurant.
Heat for the building is provided through the University of Utah Campus high temperature / high pressure heating system, also designed by VBFA. |

Site design included site utilities, mass excavation, access roads, parking, grading, retaining systems, coordination with a tunnel access to the existing hospital, relocation of gas and culinary water utilities, and construction of a 7,000 foot offsite sanitary sewer line.
