History

Our services are concentrated in the mechanical, electrical and civil engineering fields. Our basic objective is the provision of the best possible professional service to the client and to the public. Our clientele includes architects engaged as prime professionals for design of all types of buildings, direct work for other clients in connection with modernization or expansion of various types of buildings and municipalities and developers for civil projects. In addition, we provide engineering studies for energy conservation as well as system analysis studies.

The firm was initially established in April 1972 under the name of Van Boerum Associates, Inc, as a corporation registered in the State of Utah. J. Howard Van Boerum was the Principal and majority stockholder. The firm was established after the dissolution of the firm of Smith and Van Boerum, Inc. which had been in practice since October of 1966.

The firm of Van Boerum Associates, Inc. operated in offices at 2285 South 300 West in Salt Lake City.

John D. Frank joined the firm as a design engineer in October 1972. In 1978, John Frank became a Principal in the firm upon purchase of stock in the Corporation.

The name of the firm was changed to Van Boerum & Frank Associates, Inc. Consulting Engineers October 1, 1978 and the offices were moved to 1381 East 2100 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Terry R. Price joined the firm in February of 1980 as a Principal in charge of civil engineering and has since left the firm and sold his stock back to the firm.

In May 1984, the firm moved its offices to 220 South 200 East, Suite 450, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84111.

Kim P. Harris purchased his first stock in 1985 and has since purchased additional stock in the company.

Craig J. Wessman purchased some stock in 1985. Upon his leaving in 1991, he sold his stock back to the corporation.

In 1991 David P. Baranowski and Richard G. Reeder purchased stock in the company.

Joseph V. Simmons purchased stock in 1992.

In the summer of 1992, the firm of Strata Consultants, merged with Van Boerum & Frank Associates, Inc. to create a division of Van Boerum & Frank Associates, Inc. STRATA CONSULTANTS was a Salt Lake based firm emphasizing civil and geotechnical engineering. Blaine D. Leonard, president of Strata Consultants, upon the merger of his firm and Van Boerum & Frank, became a stockholder in the firm.

In October of 1995 Van Boerum & Frank Associates, opened an office in St. George, to better serve clients in Southern Utah.

In June of 1996, Van Boerum & Frank Associates, moved its Salt Lake office to 330 South 300 East, downtown in Salt Lake City.

During the year 2001, Blaine Leonard decided to pursue other employment and sold his stock back to the firm.

In 2001, Jeff Watkins and Byron Torgersen were named Associate Principals in the firm and purchased their first stock.

In 2003 Benjamin Davis and Donald Bradshaw were named Associate Principals and purchased stock in the firm.

After demonstrating his ability to be a major contributor to the success of VBFA, Ladd Birch was invited to become an Associate Principal and purchased stock in the company in 2005.

In the summer of 2004 VBFA opened an office at 1620 W. Fountainhead Pkwy. in Tempe, Arizona. Byron Torgersen and his family moved from Salt Lake to Tempe to head that office.

During the summer of 2006, Principals in the firm completed the purchase of Howard Van Boerum’s stock in the company. His title is changed to President Emeritus.

The summer of 2006 brought even more changes: Byron Torgersen and Jeff Watkins bought additional stock and were elevated from Associate Principals to full Principals in the firm. Mike Mooney, the firm’s Controller was invited to purchase stock and was named Associate Principal.

2006 was also the year that VBFA hired 16 former Bennion Associates/Spectrum Engineers employees. New Principals included Neil Spencer, Wade Bennion and Steve Shepherd. This influx of employees included a new office in Logan, Utah.

In 2007 VBFA hired Stan W. Johns, P.E. and acquired the firm of Boulder Engineering in Pocatello, Idaho. This acquisition added electrical engineering to the firm.

Lawrence Rember was hired and named Associate Principal in 2007 and heads electrical operations in the Southern Utah market.
