The Fossil Ridge Intermediate School's HVAC system is an innovative, ground coupled, geothermal heat pump system. The water used to operate this environmentally safe system circulates through high density polyethylene pipes descending 250 feet into the ground then returning to the building heat pump systems. The design carefully balances the energy exchange with the soil, resulting in negligible influence to the subterranean soil temperatures. The geothermal heat pumps are remarkably energy efficient. The use of energy recovery units and a fluid cooler for supplemental heat rejection further reduces the energy consumption. Compared with a similar school with a boiler/ chiller system, Fossil Ridge exhibited substantial energy savings. Completing the picture, the system is essentially maintenance free.
