The Emma Eccles Jones Medical Science Building is a 129,600 square foot laboratory building housing medical and biological research functions and an animal holding facility. The building was completed in December of 2005 at a cost of $33,600,000. The mechanical and fire protection costs were $8,191,000.
The building is served with high temperature water and chilled water from the campus central plant. There is a back-up steam boiler to provide temporary steam service in case the high temperature water service is interrupted. Levels 1 thru 5 and the basement Vivarium are served with a 100% outside air. The air handling systems utilize four stages of cooling and three stages of heating that includes heat recovery coils, preheat coils, free cooling coils (water from cooling tower), chilled water cooling coils, and evaporative cooling sections. The Vivarium also has steam humidification. The air supply is a medium pressure variable volume design with variable volume medium pressure exhausts. Phoenix brand air valves and control systems were utilized to control the proper air flow relationships within the hoods, labs and animal holding rooms.
